When Will Change Come

It’s only been a few days, but I think I’ve finally recovered from getting caught in the rain last week. I’m no longer carrying my umbrella with me everywhere – just in case – though maybe I should be, considering how many surprise showers we’ve had so far this spring. (In New York, at least.) When it does rain, I like nothing better than to listen to “rainy day music.” For me, rainy day music tends toward songs of the twee variety. I like to feel cozy when it’s raining out. But I also listen to songs that are lush and cinematic, spare and sad, and emotionally charged. Mostly songs that I’d like to soundtrack my life.

I made a playlist a long (long, long) time ago that I still find perfect for this in-between season. “Spring Rain” by The Go-Betweens is, as you might guess by the title, the most obvious song of the bunch. It also pops into my head just about any time someone says the words “spring” and “rain” in the same sentence, which happens roughly between five and 100 times a day, depending on the weather.

If you’d like to listen, here is the whole playlist. It features Broadcast, The Clientele, Camera Obscura, My Bloody Valentine, and a whole slew of others.

Songs of 2014

It’s mid-December, which means it’s time for me to share my favorite songs of the year. There are 75 here. That seemed like a manageable number. For variety’s sake, I only included artists once (unless they were featured on another artist’s song I liked, in which case I allowed them to be included again, because I like to make things complicated). I did include one cover – ‘Don’t Make Me Over’ – because I listened to it so much that I couldn’t resist. Also, there’s at least one song that was released in 2013 here. You can blame PC Music, which I became deeply obsessed with this spring, for that.

All songs are linked below. I’ve also created a Spotify playlist and a Soundcloud playlist (for songs not available on Spotify).

Five Things I Liked This Week

This week was sloooooow. I had a lot of time for reading, so I mostly worked my way through The Interestings by Meg Wolitzer – which I’m almost done with – and re-read a few of the chapters in Songs in the Key of Z just because I felt like it. The one really exciting thing that I did this week was…finally book a flight to London! I’m going for a week in November, so hit me up with all of your suggestions. I’ll also be stopping over in Iceland for two days at the end of the trip, so if you have any suggestions for that, I’m all ears.

Here are five things I liked this week:

1. “The Men Who Dare to Be Demented” by Katie Notopoulos (Buzzfeed)

2. “Scout’s Honor” by Rosecrans Baldwin (Oxford American)

3. Fly Art

(This is a Tumblr of classic artwork mashed up with hip hop lyrics.)

4. “The Letters That Warren G. Harding’s Family Didn’t Want You to See” by Jordan Michael Smith (The New York Times)

5. All of the songs I’ve been listening to this week, on one playlist

I Guess It Doesn’t Really Matter

I was going to write about how I left my wallet in a local pizza shop this weekend and didn’t realize it until the next morning, but it’s actually kind of a boring story.I just went to the pizza shop and asked the owner – who my friends and I call “Old Man Pizza” since he is old and a skilled pizzaiolo – if he had my wallet and he said yes and got it for me from behind the counter. And that’s the end of the story.

In the meantime, while I work on my fan fiction about Old Man Pizza, here is a playlist I made for my roommate two weeks ago of some stuff I’ve been listening to lately/this year.

Valentine’s Day Hangover

balloons

Every year, I host a Valentine’s Day party. It’s basically an excuse for me and my roommates to decorate our apartment and get drunk with our friends during one of the bleakest months of the year. It’s also an excuse for me to make a playlist, which we know is one of my favorite pastimes. This year, I found a list of every song that’s been on the Billboard chart and has had “love” in its title and went from there. I know it’s after the fact, but if you want to listen to five-ish hours of songs about love that you can probably dance to, the playlist is here and also below.
